About
The Show

BACKGROUND

"When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter."

DIRECTORS NOTE

Well, it was the spring of 2019 the last time an amazing Saxon Stage musical graced this stage before the unforeseeable pandemic hit us the following year. So many things have changed during that time. Students have come and gone, teachers have moved on, new regulations have been put into place, and fortunately I was able to land here at Langley.

This show will mark three years since a musical has hit this stage. That is just incredible and at the same time very exciting. Most of you may be familiar with this story about Katherine and Ellie. A mother and daughter who are having differences and think that the other has it easier. But what if for one day we were able to switch positions and really understand what the other person goes through? Yes, this show is silly, has great musical numbers, and all the glamour and glitz that a musical should have. However, I find the message so compelling. Ellie says in one of her songs "No more sadness, not one tear. We'll be tough together, no more fear." This is the true message I hear and see in this story. We need to take on these challenges together, not as individuals.

So, you are in for a treat! The cast, crew and I have learned this through our journey. We are so happy to share this beautiful message along with laughter and love. One of my favorite quotes by the late great Charlie Chaplin is, "A day without laughter, is a day wasted." Let's make sure to laugh more, care for each other more, and know it's okay that life is tough at times but as long as we have each other we will be okay.

So sit back and relax! Enjoy this story and the work of these amazing students here at Langley High School.
